Trial challenging redistricting map now underway

MILWAUKEE — A trial challenging Wisconsin’s new election maps is now underway. The case deals with redistricting. That’s the process in which, once a decade, lawmakers modify the maps that determine how boundary lines are drawn between voting districts.

Last year GOP lawmakers approved new maps that have been signed into law. But a group of Democrats and the Latino rights group Voces De La Frontera filed a lawsuit challenging how the lines were drawn. They argue the maps were drafted in secret and that they are unconstitutional because it deprives minorities of their voting power by splitting up their district.

Earlier this week a three-judge panel asked the Legislature to work out a compromise on the voting maps before they were to hear the case. They gave Republicans and Democrats two days, but still no agreement was reached. So today the redistricting trial is expected to begin in Federal Court.

National settlement sheds light on foreclosures

Sara K. Torres, Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service

Despite the recently announced $25 billion national mortgage settlement, it could take up to three years for banks to determine which foreclosure victims are eligible to receive any monetary relief.

The multistate settlement announced on Feb. 9 provided that Wisconsin would receive $140 million in relief for victims of deceptive mortgage practices. Gov. Scott Walker has said he intends to use $25.6 million to reduce the state budget deficit. However, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said the money should go toward foreclosure programs within the city, which has the most foreclosures in the state.

Even if all $140 million were to go toward foreclosed homeowners and prevention programs, advocates say it would not be sufficient... Read More

Southside bakery swamped over demand for Paczki

MILWAUKEE — The doors of National Bakery and Deli opened at 6 a.m sharp Tuesday to a crowd of people who had one thing on their mind – Paczki.

“Paczki are just a tradition and they’re good and the National Bakery is awesome,” customer Anna Fredrickson said Tuesday.

“It’s the dough. It’s very special dough and it’s really rich and it’s really worth the one time a year wait,” customer Ashlee Chramega said.

Some like to participate in the Mardi Gras fun of Fat Tuesday, but for others, it’s about the Polish tradition.

“It started back when they were trying to get rid of all the lard and eggs and sugar right before Lent started so they could fast for Lent,” National Bakery and Deli co-owner Jeff Callen said.

National Bakery and Deli plans to sell about 36,000 Paczki on Tuesday. Some of the bakers even worked through the night to prepare for Paczki Day.
