98 cities have higher sales taxes than Milwaukee

Out of the top 108 cities in the United States, 98 charge consumers more in sales taxes than residents of Milwaukee pay, according to a report from the Tax Foundation. The city of Milwaukee's 5.6 percent sales tax – consisting of a 5 percent state tax and 0.6 percent Milwaukee County, tourism and stadium district tax – ranks 99th in the country among the largest cities in the country. Wisconsin personal income grows 5.2% in 2011

Wisconsin personal income rose 5.2 percent in 2011, slightly outpacing national growth, according to estimates released Wednesday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. The BEA reported the Badger State had $228.9 billion in total personal income last year, up from $217.6 billion the year before. Per capita, Wisconsin saw 4.8 percent growth to $40,073. Bilingual legal services ‘unique’ to Centro Legal

For two decades, Milwaukee’s south side residents have had a place to turn for legal help, whether they can afford an attorney or not.

Centro Legal provides free bilingual legal services in areas such as family law and criminal misdemeanor defense to more than 800 people each year from its storefront office at 614 W. National Ave.

Heather Ramirez, executive director of Centro Legal, said there is a great need for free legal services in Milwaukee.

“In Milwaukee County Family Courts, 80 percent of the time one or both parties does not have an attorney,” Ramirez said. “It’s a huge high-needs area.”... Read More

Milwaukee Board of School Directors Honors Wisconsin Vision and Prevent Blindness Wisconsin

The Milwaukee Board of School Directors will honor New Berlin based Wisconsin Vision and Prevent Blindness Wisconsin with Excellence in Education Awards at the Board’s meeting tonight. The optical company and non-profit organization recently partnered on a program that provided free vision screenings to more than 500 students at Clarke Street School and Gwen T. Jackson Early Childhood and Elementary School. More than 100 of those children were then provided with free follow-up care including eyeglasses for many of them.

The Excellence in Education Award recognizes an outstanding school, student, staff member, parent, or community member for a display of excellence, achievement, and innovation that may serve as an example to our school district and the entire Milwaukee community.

About 50 local pastors and financial managers from faith-based organizations accepted an invitation from Seaway Bank, 2102 W. Fond du Lac Ave., to break bread and hear about services tailored specifically to their needs.

Tracy L. Weeks, senior vice president and north division manager of Seaway Bank, described the bank’s Church Partnership Initiative to the Milwaukee audience. The program aims to “provide financing opportunities a lot of churches need,” said Weeks.
