Raining Jane August 5 at Millions For Music Concert Series

Raining Jane comes to town August 5 as part of the Millions For Music Concert Series in Milwaukee. The four lady band plays the acoustic, indie-rock genre of music that's becoming all the rage across the nation.

Millions For Music events are concerts hosted by Susan Million who has a love and passion for music. Million said, "This is a chance for local and national artists to play in an intimate, cozy setting with a small group of people. It gives artists the chance to showcase their talents right here in Milwaukee."

The venue couldn't be more fitting for these type's of events. Live Artists Studio, 228 S. 1st Street, Suite 302, in Milwaukee is a New York Style loft equipped with a bar and an ever changing gallery of progressive artwork.

Program supports college dreams for low-income students

As Daesy Plascencia prepares to return to Mount Mary College in the fall for her sophomore year, she plans to take her coach with her. Plascencia was in the inaugural class of Admission Possible Milwaukee and is living proof that college admission is possible, with enough help and support. She is the first in her family to attend college.

Plascencia graduated in 2010 from St. Joan Antida High School, one of Admission Possible Milwaukee’s partner schools. Ninety-five percent of the seniors who participated in the two-year high school program were accepted to at least one college, according to the organization.

Founded in 2000, Admission Possible is a non-profit organization that provides students from low-income families with coaching and support to get into college and earn a degree.

Get a free ticket June 29 from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. when you bring three non-perishable food items. Donations will be accepted at the Mid Gate Promotions Booth as well as the North Gate. All donations benefit Hunger Task Force. The food drive is sponsored by FOX 6 WITI-TV Milwaukee and Johnson Controls.

12th annual citywide Special Olympics Tourney

The Milwaukee Recreation Department is hosting the 12th annual Special Olympics tournament on Saturday. It's city-wide tournament for those identified as having cognitive disabilities. They will compete in games of softball, T-ball and tennis.

The tournament is open to the public and free to enter.

Ryan Cassata brings music, message to PrideFest June 11

Ryan Cassata, a 17-year-old trans-gender boy will play the Rainbow Stage at Milwaukee's PrideFest Saturday, June 11th at 2:30 p.m. The crowds that will attend are expected to be large.

Cassata is a trans-gender activist, singer and songwriter who has been performing since he was 14. When not performing, Ryan speaks to audiences at high schools and colleges on the East Coast sharing his story with them.

Ryan's music has been at The Tribeca Film Festival and he wrote the sound track for the independent film, Loop Planes. The movie and Cassata's music has been played at several other film festivals.

The Zeidler Public Service Award is for those that have contributed to the community in any capacity. The nomination letter should be no more than three pages. Along with the letter you will want to provide the nominee's resume and supporting materials that will the selection committee. All nominations will be announced prior to August 31 and the award will be presented sometime in September.

MPS Teacher selected to partipate in Japan-U.S. exchange program

Jessica Foster, a teacher at Fernwood Montessori School, was selected from a national pool of more than 450 educators to participate in the Japan-U.S. Teacher Exchange Program for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) hosted by Fulbright Japan (Japan-U.S. Educational Commission)

The bi-nationally fully-funded program for U.S. teachers takes places in two parts: a Joint Conference with Japanese teachers in San Francisco from May 1-4 and then a study tour to Japan from June 21-July 5.

Focused on the themes of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), the program aims to deepen mutual understanding and strengthen the relationship between Japan and the United States, as well as raise awareness of ESD-orientated school programs and enhance ESD-related curricula in both countries.
