Milwaukee City Hall exterior inspection closes one lane on Water Street

A weeklong inspection of Milwaukee City Hall’s exterior began today as investigations into the cracking sculptures of the building’s exterior continues. The city will close a northbound driving lane on North Water Street to move in a 100-foot crane to give inspectors access to the building. Inspectors also will look at the southern end of the building on East Kilbourn Avenue and its eastern exterior. This is the third inspection of the building exterior since the problems with the cracking sculptures... ... Read More

New twist in Wisconsin’s voter ID lawsuits

MADISON — There’s a new twist in one of the voter ID lawsuits making its way through the court system. On Monday, April 30th, those trying to stop voter ID in Wisconsin said they want to file more evidence in the case.

Judge David Flanagan says he’ll decide in mid-June whether his temporary injunction of voter ID should become permanent. But a motion by those who want to keep voter ID — and objections to that motion — means there will be more evidence introduced and yet another hearing.

The cases that will ultimately decide whether voters will have to show photo IDs at the polls will not be settled in time for next week’s recall primaries, so photo IDs will not be required to vote.

Latinos disagree on redistricting map

Latino community members are divided about how the maps for the 8th and 9th state Assembly districts on the south side should be redrawn.

A map drawn by the Republican majority divided the 8th and 9th Districts down Cesar Chavez Drive. Republicans argued that by drawing the districts this way, Latinos might become the majority in both districts during the next 10 years. District boundaries are redrawn every 10 years, after the U.S. Census.

However, some community members are concerned that the proposed map would decrease the power of the Latino vote and ultimately lead to reduced representation in the legislature... Read More
