Events planned for parking lot on West Wisconsin Avenue

A city-owned parking lot on West Wisconsin Avenue and North Fourth Street will host the outdoor broadcast of a Milwaukee Brewers game on May 25 organized by the Pabst Theater Foundation and a June 14 IndyCar event with Andretti Sports Marketing Wisconsin hosted by Marcus Hotels & Resorts of Milwaukee. Guinness world record attempt happens June 23, Lake Geneva

Vespa and scooter enthusiasts and their fans can participate in a Guinness world record attempt for the largest scooter parade on the planet. The rally happens Saturday, June 23, 2012. The parade kicks off at 11:00 a.m.

Participation is free to anyone who will be driving any type of scooter in the parade. For those who don't wish to ride in the parade, it's a great opportunity to watch the event and be a part of history in the making.

The two-mile route through historic Lake Geneva will have a police escort. It ends with a celebration at Flatiron Park in the City of Lake Geneva. Coordinators hope to have 1,000 Vespas and scooters of all types participate.

Special Olympics athlete from Milwaukee to play in NBA Cares game

Rickie Kelly, an athlete in Milwaukee Recreation’s Special Olympics program, has been selected to participate in the first-ever NBA Cares Special Olympics Unity Sports Basketball Game, which will take place as part of the 2012 NBA All-Star weekend festivities in Orlando. The game will tip off on Center Court during the NBA All-Star Jam Session on Sunday, February 26. Rickie and eleven other Special Olympics athletes from across the country will play alongside NBA legends Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin, Dikembe Mutombo and Sam Perkins, current WNBA players, and celebrities. NBA stars Kevin Durant, Kemba Walker and Derrick Williams will also participate in the event.

City of Milwaukee Recreation receives Silver Star Award

Milwaukee Recreation has received the Wisconsin Park & Recreation Association’s Silver Star Award for Creative Service Delivery/Marketing for cities with populations over 24,000. The award, presented on November 2 during the WPRA’s annual statewide conference, recognizes the creative marketing work that Milwaukee Recreation developed to publicize its 100th anniversary throughout 2011.

“The Silver Star Award is the highest honor awarded by the WPRA,” says Molly Barrett, Milwaukee Recreation’s director. “We are especially pleased to receive this award because everything we accomplished was developed in-house. We are grateful to everyone who supported our centennial celebration and look forward to continuing our proud tradition of quality recreation and enrichment programs for the next 100 years.”

With Brewer fever rising, Time Warner Cable plans to give away 15,000 free Brewers yard signs at its retail locations across the state, including one in Wauwatosa.

Starting Friday, the cable stores will distribute one free sign per household until the signs are gone. The locations are listed below and store hours can be found at www.timewarnercable.com/wisconsin.

Milwaukee Recreation hosts Paralympic Experience

Milwaukee Recreation hosts Paralympic Experience

Milwaukee Recreation’s Paralympic Sports program will host the 2011 Paralympic Experience in conjunction with U.S. Paralympics, a division of the U.S. Olympic Committee. The event is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 25 at Juneau Campus, 6415 W. Mount Vernon Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

MPS 4th Annual Run Back to School

All runners and walkers are invited to sign up for the 4th Annual Run Back to School on Saturday August 27 at 9 a.m. It is a 5k fun run and 1.5 mile walk through Washington Park.

The goal is to promote the importance of regular exercise while raising funds for the MPS youth sports programs. The run/walk will also feature exhibit booths, kids activities and a live DJ.

The public is encouraged to register online at www.MilwaukeeRecreation.net.

The event will begin and end at Wick Playfield at 4929 W. Vliet Street. Pre-registration is preferred but walk-up registration will be available. The fee is $10 for adults and $5 per child. The adult fee will increase to $15 after August 12.
